Online Harms & Disinformation
Today, technology and journalism go hand in hand. Technology and an open internet expand the reach of journalism to communities around the world, enable more diverse news outlets to exist and give the public more choice about what media they consume. Technology has also enabled harmful content such as abuse, hateful speech and false and misleading information to spread farther and faster than ever before. It is important to address the spread of harmful content through reforms and regulations, but some may put press freedom, a competitive news environment and basic human rights at risk. We need to find solutions that address online harms and disinformation but also protect an independent press and open internet.
